Hello, I would like to produce various 30 and 60 second announcements that will include music. Promos would have music from more than one artist (such as 12 second clips of songs.)

How do I list these so that they are in line with music license? Each file only has a space for one artist; or, if it is only 12 second clips do the files have to have the artist listed?

Thank You,

Jeff

It is my understanding that short music clips can be used under the "Fair Use Doctrine" (true in at least the US and the EU), typically 30 seconds or less of audio, and should not need to be credited separately for music royalty reasons. You should be fine.

That is what I would expect, but so much about music licensing doesn't make sense to me I did not want to assume.

I'm not complaining, of course I want writers of music to be paid. I just don't understand what they are attempting to accomplish with some of the rules like the restriction on repeating a song. I've worked at terrestrial radio stations for decades and every artist I've ever interviewed would love for me to play their music - often - they would say it's never too often, but on internet they want fewer plays. I'm sure there is a reason for it, I just have no idea what it could be.
