Guessing TargetSpot couldn’t even offset the extortion. I will say I’ve been lucky to have this platform available to me over the years. Angry to see it go, but at least it will continue to be available elsewhere.

Wait a second. I assumed they meant stopping broadcasts to the US. I reread the announcement a few times. It’s not clear to me now - are they stopping US listeners, or cutting off US broadcasters?

Based on some quick back of the envelope calculations, I’m not sure how ShoutCast’s monetization can come close to supporting operating costs. Counting worldwide listeners and making an assumption that I only have to deal with SoundExchange (I’m not sure that’s true)...

With 9000 hours a month, SoundExchange pays me $81/month.

Say an average track is 3 minutes. Minus 4 minutes of ads, jingles, etc, that’s about 18 tracks an hour. 18 x 9000 is 162,000 performances a month. SoundExchange’s current rate is $.0018 per performance. That’s over $290 a month! (Remember that SoundExchange’s $500/year ($42/month) minimum is a minimum rate. (And aren’t additional composer royalties kicking in soon too?)

Please tell me my calculations went wrong! Or explain how you plan to pay that kind of royalty rate with ShoutCast’s payments.

Cheers,
Larry

No, sad to say they look right. :(
Only mistake is in your second paragraph. I think you meant "Shoutcast pays me...". ;)

Is anyone at Radionomy anticipating questions?

Hello,

As storage on Radionomy can be up to 3000 tracks per station, the free one-year storage on Shoutcast is adapted to 70 GB instead of 5 GB per user account, which corresponds to the current largest storage of a US producer on Radionomy.

For any question, please post on viewtopic.php?f=33&t=56509#p173553

In addition to SoundExchange you'll have to pay ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and what ever the hell the 4th/new one is that came on board last year. Global Media Rights maybe?

I see some producers here and elsewhere discuss making a go of it under the SoundExchange $500/year license. However, either there are a lot of producers operating under a registered 501 non-profit organization, or they’re misunderstanding that $500/year is a minimum for non-non-profits.

Under the $500/year license, it might actually be feasible. Anybody have or thinking about obtaining 501 non-profit status to operate under? It doesn’t look trivial, but I’m thinking if you have a “niche” (like my stations) you might be able to set up something up that qualifies for the status.

Do listeners see any change after the migration to Shoutcast?

There is little, if any change, to the listener experience. All previous connections will work properly: your Radionomy exportable players, if you are using them, will continue to work. The listen.radionomy.com/yourradio works as well. Whether or not this changes at a future date (like say after 31 May) remains to be seen.

Is there any info as to whether the Shoutcast platform stations are carried on TuneIn?

As TuneIn evolves to a self-curated platform much like iTunes, no NEW station from any provider will be accepted. You can only UPDATE existing listings. If you have any "legacy" listings from making 130+ hours back in the "good old days" you may be able to contact TuneIn and have them updated (I was able to for the '1 Pure Alternative' station that was still listed there!).

There is nothing on the actual Shoutcast RMO showing how much storage you may have available or left. But, I was able to import a 2,238 song station over with no warnings or problems, though, so take that at face value.
